Week Three of Daily 5 Lovin' Every Minute

We are really on our way with the Daily 5 and CAFE routine.
We have introduced Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Word Work.
These firsties are amazing. They have built their stamina up to 17 minutes for Read to Self.
Wow!

This leaves me a little time each day to set up my conferences for our Reading Groups.
I got to two of my little ones yesterday. It was so exciting to sit and "talk" to them about reading instead of me telling them what they had to do and work on.

The two that I conferred with both need to work on Fluency. We decided that they both needed to work on adjusting their speed when they are reading. One is at a level H and the other is at a level C, but they are both going to work on the same strategy. I am just beyond excited about these Focus Groups!!!

Can you tell? :)

I am struggling a little with Work on Writing part. We use Lucy Calkins (Units of Study). I love this program. I am just not sure how to fit it in with the Writing part of Daily 5. We have only been practicing it for a week. If you have any ideas and suggestions, please leave a comment.
We began with the introduction of Word Work materials on Monday. Yesterday we worked a little with them. Controlled disaster. Well, I need to model WAY more than I did on Monday if I expect them to use them correctly. I think I introduced too many materials at once. :)

Who uses Daily 5 and CAFE in their classroom? I would love to have some conversations.

Have a wonderful day!

Installing Daily 5 Today

Everything seems to have a tech term these days. I know it doesn't sound right to say install, but I thought I would try it out anyway. :)

Today we are beginning our Daily 5 adventure.
I am going to use the lesson for "Good Fit Books" with shoes.
I show a power point from Barbara A. Smith, "If the Shoe Fits.."
Then I have a bag full of shoes that may or may not fit me or fit the activity that I am talking about.
There are so many "Good Fit Books" posters out there. I just Googled it and found a ton.
You can find one that goes with the theme of your classroom.

Another thing we are going to do is begin our Read to Self Stamina with a chart.
It is so important to model, model, model.

Here is a little FREEBIE for you.

This is something that I did well last year. :) One thing I am working on this year is staying out of the way. The one way they learn independence is for the teacher to stay out of the way. It will be my mantra this week.

My colleague and I were filling out our lesson plans for this week with our student teachers. It was so powerful for them to see how much modeling and how we introduce Daily Five with a slow and steady approach.

We'll see how today goes. Wish me luck.
Have a wonderful day!

A Long Week!

I only had my firsties for two days so far. I am EXHAUSTED!!! I need a nap! :)
I have an amazing class of little ones. I am on my honeymoon. We'll see what happens next week.

I have a student teacher this semester. She comes in on Tuesdays and Thursdays for seven weeks and then full time for seven weeks. This is the third student teacher that I have had with this schedule. I really think it benefits them greatly.
I forgot how much work they are given and how much I have to do too. :) She will keep me on my toes.

I can't wait to begin my introduction of Daily Five and CAFE next week. My colleague, Linda and I created our plans for next week. We are so excited.

We are going to do the following lessons:
Good Fit Books (with the shoes, of course)
IPICK
Introduction of Read to Self with correct/incorrect/correct procedures
Read to Self ICHART

I am going to be creating some products over the weekend to help us out next week. Look for these to be up in my TpT store soon.

In the meantime, my Happy First Day of School Giveaway is almost over. Make sure you enter to win. :)

$10 Gift Certificate and items in my store. :)
Good Luck!
