We Skyped with Dr. Tony Wagner!!!

The culminating event of the second day of PBLNY was Skyping with Tony Wagner.

He was amazing!
My favorite quote from him was, "Hold me accountable for what matters most.".
So powerful!
He asked, "What is a school for in the 21st century?".

We need to create problem solvers.
These are the kinds of things that we need to be teaching our kids in the 21st century.
1. accountable teamwork
2. interdisciplinary courses
3. culture of classroom (empower students)
4. F - Failure - make a mistake
5. motivation (make a difference or do work worth doing)
Intrinsic?
play
passion
purpose
Help teachers and parents understand what's at stake. Understand the world we live in.
Urgency for change.

Most Likely to Succeed
Show this in your community.

What content are kids learning?
What skills are they learning?
How are they being motivated?

Advocate for complete redesign of educating these children.

Give them regular opportunities to be architects or their own learning.

Personalized ~vs~ Independent Learning

PBL NY Day 1 Michael Gorman

My first day at PBL NY I chose to go see Michael Gorman's presentation:
Online Resources That Will Amplify PBL in a Blended Environment.

If you ever want to have your head filled with so much information...go see him!
And.. this was comprised of TWO sessions! WOW!!!

I am going to try to put this into a format where you can understand all the notes I took at these sessions.

He talked a lot about:
Digital Citizenship
Learning Management Systems
Using the right tool for the right task
Keep it centered on student learning
Focus on the student not the initiative or device

One thing you can do is visit his website. There is a wealth of information there.

Here is one post that I think you will find helpful. It is one of four, so go check out all of them.

Yes, that says FORTY!!! Go check it out!

Here are some of the websites that he told us about. I liked that it was not all about student driven websites. These are also for classroom management, teacher information, as well as student information.

Mr. Gorman called this legalized texting. :)

This would be so amazing in the upper grade levels.

This is a tool just like a "parking lot" with sticky notes online.

It's a timeline. AWESOME!!!!!

                           Scrumy?

Scrumy is a project management tool loosely based off of Scrum.

Who made this thing?

A few guys with ridiculous mustaches and inconsistent accents.

Why does Scrumy exist?

We were attempting to use Scrum to manage our projects, but the generic sticky notes we bought kept falling off the wall. We looked for online solutions to scrum, but all of them were too complicated and expensive. All we really wanted was an online version of our wall sticky notes. So we made one.

How much does Scrumy cost?

The original version of Scrumy is and will always be available for free. However, we did take some time to add a few extra features which you can get by clicking the upgrade link on your project. You can upgrade for $7/month, or $5/month if you prepay for a year.

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan to provide "a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere". The organization produces micro lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. (Wikipedia)

Unlimited access to hundreds of leveled news articles and Common Core– aligned quizzes, with new articles every day.

If you Google...Google Advanced Search, I have found this is the easiest way to get here. You can limit your search to find exactly what you want.

An awesome resource for graphic organizers.

If you are looking for Driving Questions check out these websites.

Or if you want your Entry Event to be fun and animated...

I am going to stop here and let this all sink in. I know I had to.
I'll be back tomorrow with some more amazing resources to help you with your PBL and everyday learning in your classroom.

Have a wonderful day!

PBL NY Day 1 Keynote Speaker Sam Seidel

I have had the opportunity to attend PBL NY again this year.
Shout out to my district for sending me! Thanks Cazenovia Central School District!

It is an amazing conference full of presenters, educators, administrators, college professors, and experts.
If you want to know ANYTHING about Project Based Learning, this is the place to go!

I am going to have to break this up into a bunch of posts. There is WAY too much information for one or just a few. :)

PBLNY opened with Sam Seidel.

What a start to the conference!

This was Sam Seidel at PBL World 2013.
If you would like to watch his presentation, click the link.

Mr. Seidel's presentation was about "What does PBL stand for?".
How can we keep ALL students engaged and empire them as change makers?
What's your driving question?
What do your students love to do/make?
How can you make your projects "realer"?

Keep it REAL
Real World
Real Work
ReAlevant

PBL prepares students to be:
successful in college
desirable employees
entrepreneurs
change makers

PBL can stand for:
Practice Before Life
Platform to Build their Legacy
Prevent Boring Lessons :)
Prepare Bold Leaders

As I am just touching a little on what Mr. Seidel spoke about, you should look him up. If you ever get the chance to go see him speak, he is outstanding, motivating, inspiring, and real.

He did all these things at schools. He brought in projects for kids to do that were real for them. He made them want to do well in school so that they could continue doing these kinds of projects.
You have to check out his bio. He has done some AMAZING things!
I can't wait to see what he does next.
